GLAUCOMA – SILENT THIEF OF SIGHT

Glaucoma known as the silent thief of sight, often can go undetected in many patients because this eye disease can have no symptoms. Glaucoma is on of the leading cause of blindness in the world, especially when left untreated. There is also no cure for glaucoma, but there are different treatment options which can help protect your vision and eyes.

Who is at risk for getting glaucoma? The answer is everyone. Everyone is at risk for getting this eye disease which according to Glaucoma.org is, “Glaucoma is a complicated disease in which damage to the optic nerve leads to progressive, irreversible vision loss.” What is even more frightening is the amount of people who have glaucoma. Just in America alone, almost 2.7 people are affected by glaucoma and nearly half of these people have never been treated. While everyone is at risk for this condition, it is important to maintain that some factors can increase your risk of being diagnosed with the condition.

Over the Age of 60

People over the age of 60 are six times more likely to be diagnosed with glaucoma. Glaucoma is more common with age and through yearly comprehensive eye exams can be detected.

Glaucoma in the Family

Like many different health risks, glaucoma can be hereditary. If you have immediate family members who have glaucoma your risk increases for being diagnosed. Open-angle glaucoma is the most common glaucoma that is also hereditary. According to Glaucoma.org, “family history increases risk of glaucoma four to nine times”.

Ethnicity

African Americans and Asians have both an increased risk of glaucoma. For African Americans they are six to eight times more likely to be diagnosed with glaucoma than Caucasians. For people of Asian descent, they are more likely to get angle-closure glaucoma.
